Japan University Stars of the Future #1 Hosea Saumaki

Recently LRB sports sat down with promising young Tongan rugby player Hosea Saumaki. Here’s what he had to say about life in Japan.

Name: Hosea Saumaki

Country: Tonga

Hometown: Nuku alofa

Height: 188cm

Weight: 100kg

Rugby team in Japan: Daito Bunka University which is located in Itabashi.

What was your first impression of Japan when you arrived? I was very surprised at how nice the people were they are extremely kind and generous. The food here is very nice and there is so many different variety!

Whats your favourite food in Japan? I love sushi very much.

Favorite Japanese word? がんばる – this means do your best in English. We often use during practice and before games. It really amps us up!

Where do you see yourself in the future? Next year I will enter the Japan top league, At the moment Im still deciding which team I will play for next year, Im looking forward to it.

Who are the people you look up to? Of course my family.

Who are your favorite players? Jonah Lomu is my favourite player of all time.

Whats your favourite quote? Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations.

Words of advice for high school students considering playing in Japan? if you got a chance to play in Japan it is a great opportunity for you to start your new rugby life, make sure you enjoy it and always love your job as a player, never give up on your dream
