Japan University Stars of the Future #6

LRB sports caught up with former Counties and New Zealand basketball representative, Maori boy  Te Tuhi Roberts. Hear what the big man has to say about rugby in Japan, what he misses from home and what advice he has for young rugby players hoping to follow in the same footsteps.

Name: Te Tuhi Roberts

Country: New Zealand

Hometown: Auckland

Height: 190cm

Weight: 109kg

Rugby Team : Tokai University (Shonan campus)

First impression of Japan? I was fortunate enough to attend high school up north in Hokkaido and it was freezing! Snowing every winter with snow coming up to your knees. I’ve seen so many people with chingy eyes due to the cold. Big change up for a boy coming from Auckland.

Favourite food? Has to be Mums Cooking. But In Japan its definitely Yakiniku and sushi. I once consumed 42 plates of sushi (84 pieces) in one hit!

Favourite Japanese Word? 大丈夫(daijobu) because everything is all good right now.

Future ambitions? Hopefully I will still be based here in Japan playing top league rugby for a company team.

People you look up to and why? Definitely my mum and dad, because without their sacrifices I wouldn’t be where I am now.

Favourite player and why? Without a doubt, Jonah Lomu. As a young lad I always watched him play. i liked him because he didn’t just run through his defender but the whole team to get a try. He was a beast!

Advice to high school players?
I think its very important to train hard, train well and have fun doing it.

Favourite Quote: ‘Practice makes perfect’ because your only gonna get better at something if your willing to put the work in

If you wern’t playing rugby what would you be doing now? I would probably be playing Basketball and going to university somewhere else?
